Princeton Week 7: Fun with Flappy Bird
Today in the Video Game Creation class, the students made a version of 2 player pong and the game Flappy Bird. They first had mini lessons on conditions, actions, frames and if statements. Then, they applied their learning to the creation of their own versions of the games. For Flappy Bird, students learned that conditions are what allow the bird to move up and down when certain buttons are pressed. They programmed their birds to move up when the space bar is pressed and learned the lesson that in all games, conditions need to be in place for the characters to complete actions such as when the spacebar is pressed, the bird will jump. After creating the Flappy Bird game, students got to customize the colors and characters to make it their own. Some of the students ideas included Flappy Pug and Flappy Airplane! The students are so excited when they get to play a game they created. It is awesome to see students learning about the technology behind things they care about and enjoy such as video games.
