Building a Home in Chatham Week 4!
Chatham July 19th, 2019
A new exciting class was introduced into Chatham’s site this week. For all the kids seeking to use their creative energy into designing functional and fancy buildings for the future Pre-Architecture is the place to be. This week, the students were tasked to build houses and other structures using online software such as SketchUp and Room Sketch. The kids were challenged to create their own houses and learned important properties of design such as scaling, material, weight, visual appeal, and real life usability. Some houses were mansions with pools and kitchens with glass doors and granite islands. Some of the houses were modest and homey with comfortable furniture. Not only did the kids design their own houses, they also learned about architecture in the real world. They learned about engineering disasters such as Galloping Gertie which is when a poorly-constructed bridges collapse due to oscillated high wind movements. Students had to also create presentations on famous architects throughout history and explained some design styles and techniques that these architects used on their famous buildings. Make sure to add Pre-Architecture to your wishlist for classes to take in the future if you are ready to use your creative problem solving skills!
